Exterior Features and Design

The Chevy Traverse features sporty styling and bold lines from its upright body panels, defined shoulders, and bold grille. It looks like an SUV, feels like an SUV, and handles like an SUV. Does that make the Traverse an SUV? It’s still technically a crossover but this vehicle will definitely appeal to the traditional SUV crowd. If youre looking for a variety of styles and add-ons suiting an active lifestyle, shopping for a new Traverse will be a delight.

The Dodge Durango is also an SUV-like crossover, featuring a more rugged-looking body and boxy exterior. In fact, the only thing keeping it from being a true SUV is its lack of a body-on-frame construction. Setting the Durango apart from the Traverse — and pretty much every other crossover — are the exterior upgrades to their performance models, R/T and SRT, and the resulting body that makes them look right at home on any trail.

In terms of size, the Traverse is a little larger in most dimensions. It comes in at 204 inches in length and nearly 79 inches in width, with a height of almost 71 inches. Durango is a taller, heavier, and provides a little higher ground clearance at 8.1 inches. The Durango is 201 inches long, nearly 76 inches wide, and about 71 to 73 inches tall depending on the package you select.

Pros for the 2020 Traverse

  • Spacious interior with lots of available upgrades
  • Newer design
  • Lighter than the Durango

Pros for the 2020 Durango

Interior Design and Technology

When Chevy redesigned the Traverse, they also enhanced the interior with a variety of upgrades. Inside, the 2020 Chevy Traverse has some SUV-like touches with its streamlined console,, vertical air vents, and upright dash. You can add a touch of luxury with a variety of enhancements like the LS Leather trim that adds streaks of leather to the dash and ventilated leather seats in the cabin. Standard technology features in the Traverse include Chevrolet’s Infotainment 3 system with a 7-inch touch screen, six USB ports, Bluetooth, a Wi-Fi hot spot, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto.Available upgrades include a rear-seat entertainment system, wireless device charging, an 8-inch touch screen, navigation, a 10-speaker Bose audio system, and satellite radio.

The Durango has a simpler interior, but it has a design similar to the brand’s modern-day muscle cars with a three-spoke steering wheel, T-handle gear shift, relatively feature-free dash, and dark interior coloring. The outcome is a simple and sporty look that matches the sturdy exterior. While the performance trims get a lot of looks, the Durango Citadel Anodized Platinum trim hits the luxury mark with leather seating, a leather-wrapped dash, and some upgrades to the dash.

Because of its larger body, the 2020 Traverse gives you more room for your passengers and more cargo room all around. You get an extra inch of headroom, 3 to 6 more inches of shoulder room depending on where you’re sitting, and over a foot of cargo room per row. Plus, the Chevy comes standard with a third row, whereas the Durango’s third row is an optional add-on starting with its base SXT trim.

  • More room for passengers
  • Has more cargo room across the board

Pros for the 2020 Durango

  • Features a more compact design
  • Citadel Anodized Platinum trim offers leather upgrades
  • Sporty features on R/T and SRT models

Performance and Handling

Crossovers generally offer limited performance, but the Chevy Traverse and Dodge Durango are here to change that trend. We were pleasantly surprised to see both crossovers deliver performance similar to many full-size SUVs.. The 2020 Traverse’s standard 3.6-liter V-6 engine cranks out 310 horsepower and pushes it to 60 mph in just 6.3 seconds. In the RS trim, it swaps in a 257-horsepower 2.0-liter turbo four-pot that zips it to 60 mph in 7.1 seconds. Front-wheel drive is standard, but all-wheel drive is available with the V-6 engine.

The Durango delivers especially sporty crossover performance, starting with the somewhat modest 3.6-liter V-6 engine that can put out 295 horsepower. This pushes the Durango to 60 mph in a respectable 7.4 seconds. In the R/T trim, which uses a 360-horsepower 5.7-liter V-8, things get exciting with its 6.2-second 0-to-60 sprint time. The SRT model drops in a 475-horsepower 6.4-liter V-8 that zips it to 60 mph in a neck-breaking 4.7 seconds.

Towing is not a huge deal in the crossover segment, but the Traverse cranks out an impressive 5,000-pound rating with its V-6 engine. The Durango is a towing master, ranging from its 6,200-pound base towing capacity all the way up a 8,200-pound capacity with the 6.4-liter engine.

Pros for the 2020 Traverse

  • Base Traverse is quicker than base Durango
  • Huge fuel economy advantage
  • Delivers a smoother, quieter ride

Pros for the 2020 Durango

  • Strong and fast with the available V-8 engines
