Chevy eCrate EV Retrofit Motor Kit

Got an old gas guzzler that you love, but hate the way it hurts the environment? Soon, you may not have to make the choice. You may be able to keep the shell and many of the features you love, but you may be able to get an electric engine that doesn’t use up as many natural resources. Chevy has announced that it will be selling an eCrate EV retrofit motor kit that you can use to turn just about any vehicle into an electric vehicle.

Chevy has been selling its crate engines for some time now – engines that they make for their vehicles but shipped in a crate to DIY mechanics and hobbyists. The new eCrate is a variant, known as the Electric Connect and Cruise package. It includes the electric motor, transmission, and battery system.

What Can It Do?

The engine offered in the new eCrate is the same that is offered in the Chevy Bolt, and it puts out 200 horsepower. Chevy promises that its production controllers and wiring harnesses helps to keep many of the features from the Bolt EV, including the battery heating and cooling, battery overcharge protection, shock protection, and regenerative braking.

The eCrate also comes with an electric power steering kit and an electric pump for the brakes. It also has an electronic controller that connects to the display unit, helping you to know the battery’s charge level instead of the fuel level.

Connecting the Crate

Just like the previous crate that Chevy was offering, the new eCrate will be available for direct sale to the consumer. DIY enthusiasts can install the engine on just about any vehicle. Examples have already been shared of the engine being put into vintage and gas-guzzling models, including a Chevy Blazer.

If you aren’t mechanically savvy or just don’t want to do the work yourself, Chevy says it will also be training dealers to install the kits for you. You should be able to go to your local Chevy’s dealer’s service department to have the kit installed in the car of your choice. You don’t have to be held back by your mechanical skill in order to get the benefits of electronic technology. You also don’t have to trade in your vehicle or buy a new one to get the benefits of electronic technology – you can convert the vehicle you have and get the best of both worlds.

Buying the Crate

The new eCrate won’t go on sale until the second half of next year. The crate made its debut at SEMA, which ran from Nov. 2-6 and was held entirely online. You can still view footage and coverage of the event online.

Visit Betley Chevrolet when the crate becomes available to learn more and to place your order. You can also talk to our service department about the possibility of installing the new kit in your vehicle. You can also sign up to get notifications about when the new crate will go on sale so that you can be one of the first to get it.
