New Diesel Engine Option for the Tahoe and Suburban
For those who need heavy duty power and support, they know that Chevrolet offers the performance they need in their work trucks. They also know that diesel engines are the superior choice, thanks to their additional torque. In the latest offerings from Chevy, they can now get both. Both the 2021 Chevy Tahoe and the 2021 Chevy Suburban will be offering an optional diesel engine for those who need the extra power for hauling the heaviest of loads.
Here’s what we know so far:
Both the 2021 Chevy Tahoe and the 2021 Chevy Suburban will be built on the same platform as the Silverado 1500. They will come with two gas-powered engine options, as well as one diesel engine: The 3.0-liter Duramax turbo-diesel. The inline-six engine will offer 277 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque.
Comparatively, the base engine is a 5.3-liter V8 that puts out 355 horsepower and 383 lb-ft of torque. The other engine option is a 6.2-liter V8 that puts out 420 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque. The second V8 is only available on the top High Country trim level, while the Duramax diesel is available on all trim levels except the Z71 trim.
The Duramax diesel engine makes the 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe the most fuel-efficient full-size SUV in its class. For rear-wheel drive models, the Tahoe is set to get an estimated 28 mpg on the highway with the Duramax engine, or 21 mpg in the city. The combined fuel efficiency is estimated at 24 mpg. For full-wheel drive models, the Tahoe is expected to get 26 mpg on the highway with the Duramax engine, 20 mpg in the city, or 22 mpg combined.
Numbers are similar in the all-new Chevy Suburban. Two-wheel drive versions of the Suburban are expected to get 27 mpg on the highway, 21 mpg in the city, and 23 mpg combined. All-wheel drive models are expected to get 26 mpg on the highway, 20 mpg in the city, and 20 mpg combined.
With a more powerful engine, you can expect to carry heavy loads in the all-new Chevy Tahoe or Suburban. The 2021 Chevy Tahoe equipped with the Duramax engine will be able to tow up to 8,200 pounds, and it will have a max payload of 1,717 pounds. The 2021 Chevy Suburban with the same engine will be able to tow up to 8,000 pounds and will have a max payload of 1,625 pounds.
